I keep getting message requests on Instagram with a message that looks like you replied to their story, however the message is on the left and it’s mostly spam accounts. Is this a new growth method people are trying out? Does anyone have any information on this?

The left-side bubble means the message is incoming; it does not establish that anyone replied to a story. The sender may simply be using “you replied to their story” wording as a cold-DM opener because it looks more personal than a generic request. From that message alone, there is no basis to call it a new Instagram feature or a confirmed growth method. The useful distinction is between what the interface shows about message direction and what the sender’s text claims happened.
