Has things changed that much since I took a break? Since when was this a thing?

are you saying that when you change your username on IG you get this message? Well, it can be suspicious to IG if you change your name too often.
I’ve just tried and was able to change my username without problems on IG. But yeah if you are trying to do it too often I presume that’s a logical thing to expect.
Not the username, I got that when trying to change the name on the account 2-3 times in a short period of time.
I didn’t experience this personally, but it’s not strange that they could consider this as suspicious and stop you from doing it often. I mean, why would a real person change these details so often 
Because kids are impulsive… there are people who change their username multiple times a month… why? I have no clue. I’m surprised they put the limit on account name and not the username. Maybe that’s next to come.
