Beginners Guide to Identifying a Niche

Hi everyone,

This is a small post about how I usually identify a niche and is for new people entering the IG game.

Let’s start with the definition of a niche. A niche is a small, specialized market for a particular product or service. In our case we want to find a niche in Instagram.

All right, now that we have our definition, how can we identify a niche?

Niches can be anything from cars to animals. Usually you want to specialize your content in a niche so that you target people who are interested in it. It is easier to target people in a specific market segment as opposed to target the whole market itself. For example, if your account is posting fitness content, you won’t go and follow people who are interested in cars as it would be a waste of time and resources. Instead, you would have more success following people who are already interested in fitness to grow your account.

Let’s take a look at some popular niches on Instagram at the moment (without specific order):

  1. Travel
  2. Beauty
  3. Fitness
  4. Animals
  5. Lifestyle
  6. Making money online

Please note that the above list is non-exhaustive and there are more niches.

Even if the above niches are a good start, you want to find something more specific in the niche itself. For example, for fitness, you could go for female fitness, female bodybuilders or cross-fitters.
For beauty, you could go for beauty tutorials or make-up inspirations, etc. For animals, you could specialize in specific animals like dogs or sea animals. For travel you could go for destination travels, travel journeys or wanderers.

If you are new and looking for a niche, you could start with the above to test what works for you or not. However, the best you could do is to look for a niche within a niche. From what I learned, the more you specialize, the more loyal fanbase you can get. However, if you specialize too much in a niche, be careful to the number of people interested in that niche, because it could decrease as you go deeper in the niche.

Anyways, I hope that this post helps you identify a niche in which you can grow

Cheers,
Taypher

I was wondering, how do you make sure IG recognizes your niche

Usually when you follow people in your niche, IG will automatically assume that you are interested in that niche. Let’s say if you follow 50 people in the fitness niche and 5 people in other random niches, IG will automatically think that your are interested in fitness and put you in that niche. The way they categorize your account is probably a mix of multiple factors, one main being the people you follow.

Just like, comment, follow and save posts in that niche. As @taypher mentioned, IG will automatically “learn” that you like that niche

Thanks for the share, what are the other ways to let IG learnt that we are in this specific type of ‘niche’? For example, following large accounts will help us potentially be in the ‘Suggested’.?

@senseifuel You can like, comment and save posts in that niche or specific hashtags. Doing this regularly will make IG “learn” that you’re in that niche

Thanks, does posting the same kind of content will also allow IG to recognize as well?

For example, if you are in the ‘fighting niche’ and you are an account focusing purely on MMA, is IG able to pick up that you are in the ‘MMA niche’ since you are posting MMA content only or it has to be follow, like, comment and saved by MMA accounts?

Posting also works
Just make sure you use appropriate hashtags

Adding to what @funniestpokemon said, it can also be determined by how much time you spend on the explore page on posts that interest you. There are also the likes that you give.
