How important are tags on instagram? I’m referring to post tags. Should I have like a set default tag list or should it be different for every video?

IMHO hastags r one of the most important thing if u create content and want people to find it. They have no other ways of finding it.

There are many ways of dealing with hastags. Try and choose what you like. In example:

  1. Some people choose only few specific hastags to their posts.
  2. Some people will use all 30 hastags available to reach more people - I use this method.

Also:
a) make sure your hastags are not banned and never use those,
b) use relevant to your post hastags,
c) never use same hastags over and over again,
d) if you have no followers don’t use at all or use like only 1 to 5 popular hastags because your post will die within those hastags in fraction of the second :wink:

I spend few hours selecting hastags for my niche and grouped them in 9 groups which is enough for me. Then I upload my photo/video using first group of hastags, another with second group, and so on. Then I go back to the first group. That way I don’t repeat hastags and can reach much more people.

So by don’t repeat, you mean don’t repeat the same tags you have on one video on the other? I have a comedy skits channel that’s why I’m asking. There’s not that many available comedy hashtags.

Also, if I go back and add tags to existing posts, will that help?
I have about 4700 followers.

Yes, IG has some rules to using same hastags all over again and might consider it spammy. In each of my group I repeat only few hastags that are my brand related because those are my posts. But the rest of the hastags are different but similar between groups.

I thought that too for my niches but use every hastag related to your posts. The best source of hastags is to check what other people in your niche using and it should give you enough hastags. You can create your own hastags as well.

Try something like I did - for example out of air now :wink:
group 1 - yourbrand comedy funnypicture justlaugh
group 2 - yourbrand comedy funnypic just4laugh
group 3 - yourbrand comedy funnylikehell laughter

IG allow you to use 30 hastags max. If you didn’t add 30 hastags before then those hastags u will add now - will count towards that 30 hastags limit. You can edit caption or add those in comments - it doesn’t matter.
But IMHO it’s useless because your posts are already posted so they should not be visible in latest posts for those hastags - but you should check this yourself - update hastags in one post and then immediately click on one of those hastags and see if you can find your post in latest posts for that hastag. If not then reupload your posts with hastags. Just don’t reupload it all at once.

How do I know which tags work best? Should I worry about figuring out which tags work best? Or would just having a lot of tags rotated like that do better? Also, at what point would tags be unnecessary?

I don’t know how to check which hashtags work the best and I don’t know if this is truly possible - simply because there are so many variables - post itself, time of publish, competition etc. You can always use different hashtags on new posts and experiment with them. I just use different groups of hashtags and don’t think about it too much :wink:

I also don’t know when hashtags are unnecessary - IMHO they are very important.

Maybe more experienced forum users could say something more about it?
