Instagram and Facebook gender information

Recently a guide here on the forum discussed the option in Jarvee use names list to filter followers by gender.

Since giving information about one’s gender in an Instagram profile is optional, I was wondering if anyone knows how such information is collected by Instagram to use in insights and for sponserd posts targeting?

Facebook and at account creation. Only they know

People DO HAVE GENDERS. But… shame on me for not knowing all 63 by heart. I am a naiv boy who grew up in a small village where the world was black and white as well as female or male. EDIT: or neutral --> German “es”

But we are all here to learn and advance… aren’t we

Facebook/IG hold onto gender data for their advertising.
It’s not public data so name filtering is your best solution today.

Didn’t think I could get access to it (which could be amazing)
Just wondering if anyone has guesses/information about how they are doing this classification.

I don’t think Instagram uses the gender specifically for targeting posts, but rather what you like etc. A gender filter is too bias imo.
