Reels - Pros and Cons - Share your experience and hints

Hi everybody!
I like the new reels and want to share my experience from my personal account.
I realized since I am posting reels once a week since two month my engagement measured on my pictures was getting lower by 30% from 12% to 8%. I posted reels that are not 100% related to my posts. I do mostly bnw street photography and posted some reels with bnw timelapse art films, timelapse of cities and drone shots. Maybe I should work with slideshows of my pictures and add some cool music to be 100% related to my pictures.

I get about half the likes on my reels and about similiar amount of views as a bad post picture-posts or half or less views on a reel than a good working post.

So for me it doesnt really work out in the sense of gaining engagement. But still I like the format and never started Tik-Tok.

I realized that more reels with original sound or its own music have hign views and likes than reels with music from IG. Can you relate?

I tried posting reels at the same time as picture post or instead of my daily post. I tried showing them in the feed and not showing all have very similar amount of views. I am aware it is just me on one account with less than ten reels for now but maybe this report helps you comparing and I would love to read your experiences!

This should be interesting topic when more users start using it and gain more experience. I still didn’t start with it and can’t really share something valuable, but I hope that I will be able to contribute in some future period

I wonder if today almost three month later maybe some of you have some experience on reels and organic reach growing or not ?

Reels clips have to be engaging themselves. Your niche (B&W photography) isn’t probably easy to make reels that way, at least not as easy as other niches can be. A simple slideshow of images won’t go far, except if the editing is really good, or something’s new brought to the table !

From checking comments in memes pages for example,i can tell you people absolutely hate reels. There is no reason to engange with reels content, since i asume people mostly hate it.Maybe thats why you engagement is lower.
They push your content to more people, but less people engage with it,if that makes sense.

That can be also very true …

Probably this is the case though on theother side not many reels exist in this niche. A well produced video showing a behind the scenes of a photo shooting might be an interesting reel but also lot of work… Thanks for your ideas, Denis!

Absolutely makes sense! I see for example 9gag who always worked with short videos but than the limitation to 15 seconds doesnt make sense for most of their content…

Can you share an example / a reason why they hate it?
