Hey MPSocial community,
I’ve been a long-time member of this forum, and I can’t help but feel like the current user level system is contributing to its decline. The stringent requirements to level up are creating a barrier to engagement, making it nearly impossible for new and existing members to participate actively and meaningfully.
The Current State of MPSocial
As it stands, most of the activity here is dominated by marketplace sellers. The once vibrant community we had is now just a shell of what it used to be. Here’s a quick recap of the current user levels:
User Level 0 (New)
- Limited functionality (e.g., restricted from sending private messages, posting attachments, etc.)
- Requirements: None (automatic upon registration)
User Level 1 (Basic)
- Requirements: Enter at least 5 topics, read 30 posts, spend 10 minutes reading posts
- Privileges: Upload images, send private messages, flag spam posts
User Level 2 (Member)
- Requirements: Visit 25 days, cast 100 likes, receive 75 likes, reply to 150 topics, enter 350 topics, read 1500 posts, spend 600 minutes reading
- Privileges: Access to Level 2 categories, invite others to topics, increased daily like limit
User Level 3 (Regular)
- Invite-only VIP level
- Privileges: Recategorize topics, access to private lounges, increased daily like limit, and more moderation capabilities
The Problem
The level-up requirements are too aggressive. The domino effect this creates is devastating:
- New Users Struggle to Engage: The high bar for leveling up discourages new users from sticking around long enough to become active members.
- Reduced Activity: With fewer active participants, the forum feels empty, which discourages even more users from engaging.
- Marketplace Dominance: The lack of general user activity has allowed marketplace sellers to dominate the forum, making it feel more like a classifieds site than a community.
A Call for Change
I believe MPSocial has the potential to be a great forum again if we revisit and revise the level requirements. Here are some suggestions:
- Lower the Bar for Leveling Up: Make it easier for new users to move up to higher levels. This will encourage more participation and create a more dynamic community.
- Regularly Update Criteria: The current criteria haven’t been updated since December 2016. It’s crucial to keep them relevant and achievable based on current user behavior and forum activity.
