Separate Bio Link Visits From Story Link Visits

When your Instagram bio and a Story promote the same offer, use two versions of the same destination link. Keep the landing page, offer, and call to action identical; change only the tracking tag. That gives you a cleaner comparison than judging the placements by link taps alone.

For example, add utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=oct_offer&utm_content=bio to the bio link, and use the same tags with utm_content=story for the Story link. Publish the Story, leave the bio link in place, and define a 24-hour comparison window before you look at results. Avoid adding another Instagram placement for that offer during the window if you want the comparison to stay simple.

Afterward, compare landing sessions for each tag, then count a meaningful action such as booking-page visits, sign-ups, or purchases. If the Story brings more sessions but the bio brings more actions per session, those placements may be serving different levels of intent. That’s more useful than declaring one link the winner based on traffic alone.

When you promote one offer in both places, which action would tell you the visits were worthwhile?

The missing detail is overlap: did the same person visit through both the Instagram bio link and Instagram Story link before converting, and in what order? UTM tags identify tagged visits, but if someone uses both links, they cannot establish which placement caused the conversion or how many conversions either placement added.

Use event-level journey data, where available, to group tagged visits by visitor identifier and timestamp. You can then see which visitors used both the Instagram bio link and Instagram Story link, in what order, and whether they converted afterward. UTM tags label those visits; they do not establish which placement caused the conversion.

For reporting, choose one rule and apply it consistently—for example, assign each conversion to the last tagged link visited before it, and count it only once. Keep journeys you cannot link together separate. That produces a consistent conversion split, not a measure of either placement’s incremental impact.
